Writing a cover letter
A cover letter is something that goes in conjunction with your CV when applying for a job. The purpose of the cover letter is to show your writing skill and should relate to your skills and experience specific to the position you are applying for. Your cover letter is an opportunity to make a good impression. You also have a chance to explain situations you couldn’t on a CV for example, why you would like to leave your current position or why you had a gap in your employment, where you were probably made redundant. It does not need to be more than one page long.
Remember the purpose of the cover letter. Your objective is to make the interviewer want to read more about you. Adapt every cover letter you write for each position. There is no such thing as a general cover letter. It should be written to match the description of the job for which you are applying. Each time you write a cover letter try finding different ways to compile it.
Start by including all of your contact information which should include your telephone number, address and email. You need to make sure the prospective employer can get hold of you easily. Also, ensure you have the employers’ details written correctly and you know who you are sending your cover letter to.
In the first paragraph you should mention the position you are applying for and where you saw the job advertised.
The next part of your cover letter should mention particularly how your skills and qualifications fit the job you are applying for. You could also state your current/last position and what skills you have learnt and what skills you can bring to the position applied for.
Finish your cover letter by letting the employer know when you are available for an interview and show your keenness for the chance to tell them more about yourself.
After you compose the cover letter spell check and proof read to ensure it sounds right and for errors. Ask someone to look at it for you. Certain information you have pulled out from your CV should match on the letter.
You can write or type your cover letter but you should always use plain white paper.
