Five Things to Ask for When Requesting a Reference Letter
  • When asking for a reference letter ensure it’s from people you know and who know you, i.e. teachers or previous employees. Not a relative. Most employees usually ask for 2 references
  • Give your referees notice when asking them, at least a week
  • When you have asked for the reference letter verbally, follow up with a letter to request the reference and state when you need it by. Make sure you include a self addressed, stamped envelope
  • When you have got your references, thank the referees by letter and possible success of your new occupation
  • If you wish to, tell the referees about what they could write for you, give them an overview about the position you have applied for
