5 Reference Letter Tips

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when writing a reference letter:

1. Are you the right person?

When asked if you could write a reference letter it is best to discuss with the individual about their performance in your company beforehand. Can you be honest and write positive things about them. The individual could give you a list of achievements on how they have performed within the business. Also having a copy of their curriculum vitae would make things easier.

2. Appearance

Gone are the days where we used to write references letters by hand. Type your reference letter as this would reflect good on both you and the candidate. Use good quality paper.

3. Skills

Give attention to a number of characteristics of the person. You need to give detail on their ability, manner, personal traits and performance and so on. This obviously is during the time that you have known the person.

4. Use of words

Watch out with certain words, they may seem safe to discuss in every day talk but when written on paper and depending how it is stated could pose an encouraging or harmful nuance to the soon to be employer.

A few words you might want to use are:

  • Honest
  • Trustworthy
  • Effective
  • Observant
  • Attentive
  • Reliable
  • Mature

Words you my try to avoid are:

  • Reasonable
  • Nice
  • Good
  • Fair/fairly
  • Sufficient
  • Satisfactory

5. Characteristics

Here are a few words to help you in wording your reference letter about the characteristics of the individual.
