Tips for Behaving More Assertively

If you are not sure on how to be more assertive and not sure on how to go about it, here are some tips to get you started. Practice makes perfect.

  • When you have an idea or opinion, speak up. Speaking out is one of the main steps to being more assertive
  • If you have opinions keep to it. If other people disagree with what you say try not to let them influence you or bully you into changing your mind. When someone puts up a good argument for you to change your mind then so be it but not because you are frightened of them
  • Be adamant that your rights are respected. There are rights that you should stand up for if you need to and may involve employment or educational law. Other rights could be just common courtesy from people in general
  • If you need someone to do something for you, don’t hesitate to ask. Some people find it hard to ask for a favour, as long as it is within reason; then there is no harm in your request
  • If someone has asked you to do something which is clearly unreasonable then you are entitled to reuse it
  • It is always good to accept compliments and criticism. Some people may find it quite embarrassing to accept compliments and make little of them. In the same way, be ready to accept criticism that may not always be encouraging. It may be unwanted advice but could be useful if worded in the right context
  • If it does not make sense to you why not ask why. It doesn’t always mean it is fair if it has always been traditional. Some rules and traditions can be flexible but if you haven’t put your argument in you will never know
