THE AGEING PROCESS

AIMS:

Current statistical figures indicate that there is an ageing population and that it is rising. It is estimated that by 2006, there will be more people of retirement age than working. There are increasing numbers of elderly users requiring care and/or medical treatment. This has implications for service delivery and the provision of care services. The programme will enable participants to share a common understanding of what the ageing process is and to explore the range of issues concerning ageing.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, participants would have:

  • Examined and discussed the role and function of Care staff and best practice guidelines of working with the elderly
  • Examined and discussed the ageing process
  • Recognised and discussed the physical changes related to ageing
  • Examined and discussed the variety of issues affecting the elderly
  • Identified and recognised the sensitivity required in dealing with the physical, emotional, social, health and care needs of users
  • Explored and discussed the support available to staff in assisting people in adapting to the physical changes of ageing
  • Examined and discussed the importance of risk assessment within their job role
  • Examined and discussed the health and safety issues within the care environment
