ANTI – DISCRIMINATORY CARE PRACTICE

AIMS:

The course is aimed at participants who wish to broaden their understanding of anti-discriminatory practice and become more effective at work. The emphasis will be on staff having a firm grasp of anti–discrimination as a practice and process, its component parts and being integral to service delivery.

The working environment offers a variety of challenges to individuals and teams as a whole. The programme aims to enhance awareness and knowledge of the diverse needs of service users in order that these are recognised in all aspects of service delivery and in the work place. The course will provide participants with an overview on promoting anti-discriminatory practice in a care setting and integrating it in all aspects of their job. To course will enable participants to identify and recognise disadvantaged groups who experience prejudice and discrimination within the care setting.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, participants would have:

Discussed the definition of discrimination, the types of discrimination and how service users might be treated and/or discriminated in a care setting
Understood the importance of accepting that discrimination exists
Defined and discussed anti discrimination and anti discriminatory practice
Defined and discussed the key aspects of the anti discriminatory process and its importance within the care setting
Examined and discussed how they might discriminate, stereotype and have preferences for some people and not others
Identified, examined and discussed how they can promote anti-discriminatory practice in their work
Identified, examined and discussed ways of improving their practice
