COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR CARE STAFF

AIMS:

The ability to communicate effectively is an important business and personal skill. Communication will only be as successful as the people who are communicating. Effective communication is the key to gaining co-operation and understanding from others. The way staff share and receive information can contribute towards providing sensitive and caring support, effective teamwork and how the organisation is viewed by others.

Each person contributes to the communication process and how staff communicate can affect other people's behaviour and the way they see themselves. This course provides an ideal opportunity for participants to re-assess their current abilities and develop new skills. The aim of the course is to give participants different models of communication which can be used in the care working environment most effectively.

The course aims to equip staff with the key communication skills necessary for effective service delivery.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, participants would:

  • Understand that people’s models of the world are different and how to use this to maximum effect in communicating to groups and individuals
  • Have assessed how they as individuals communicate and the different ways of communicating effectively with colleagues and service users
  • Have explored, discussed and practised the different ways of communicating and identified the skills necessary to be effective
  • Have understood and recognised the importance of verbal, non verbal behaviour and written communication in the communication process
  • Examined and discussed confidentiality in the communication process
  • Identified the barriers to effective communication and strategies for managing these difficulties
  • Identified key areas for their personal development - improving their communication skills
  • Examined and discussed effective strategies for building and maintaining effective working relationships
