TRAINING ON END OF LIFE CARE

AIMS

This course is designed to promote an increased knowledge and understanding of end of life care and its related issues, and to promote confidence in those who deliver care.

The physical, psychological and social elements of care will be explored through topics which include the philosophy and principles of palliative care, interpersonal skills and handling difficult situations, the effects of advanced disease on patient and family, and care at the end of life.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Establish appropriate relationships with patients and families at the end of life
  • Working within the principles and philosophy of palliative care have an awareness and understanding of psychological, social, spiritual and cultural issues
  • Be familiar with the physical symptoms and signs of advanced illness and dying
  • Understand the basic principles of management of symptoms in advanced disease
  • Recognise, monitor and report changes in the patient’s condition
  • Utilise communication and assertiveness skills to work effectively with the primary healthcare team and specialist palliative care professionals/agencies
  • Recognise the patients right to autonomy in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act
  • Be familiar with the legal and practical requirements following a patient’s death
  • Recognise limits of own expertise and know when to seek help
  • Be familiar with the terms ‘loss’ and ‘grief’ and with the grieving process
  • Understand the importance of care of self and how to maintain this
