SUPERVISEE SKILLS – GETTING THE MOST FROM SUPERVISION
AIMS:
The basic aim of supervision is to ensure that service users receive a good quality service, by ensuring that staff understand their needs and have the skills to respond to them. It is important that staff are supervised on a regular basis and the opportunities provided are valued and given a high priority by all parties. Supervision is about building and developing relationships. The focus of supervision and support is to encourage an attitude of continuous learning from experience, which aims to improve the quality of life for service users.
Effective supervision of staff is an essential element in Social Care, which enables staff to learn, develop their skills, abilities, knowledge and experience on a continuous basis and during change. Staff are encouraged to make the best use of the supervision process and time, as well as to use it as one way of learning and developing.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, participants would have:
- Identified and discussed the opportunities for staff learning and development
- Examined and discussed what is supervision and the importance and benefits of supervision to staff
- Explored and discussed the purpose and value of good supervision practice
- Examined and discussed the functions of supervision
- Explored and discussed the key aspects of supervision within a care setting
- Examined and discussed the role that supervisees play in the process and practice
- Examined and discussed how staff need to prepare themselves for supervision sessions
- Examined and discussed the power dynamics within the supervisory relationship
- Explored developing the skill of reflective practice as supervisees
The course is highly participatory in nature and combines trainer presentation, group work discussions, group work and handouts.
