TEAM AWAY DAY FOR CARE STAFF

AIMS:

The Away Day offers a structure for the team to look closely at itself; examine, explore and discuss a number of crucial issues relating to the team. These include its role and function, the services it provides and how it provides these services, but most importantly how the team members communicate, interact and work professionally with each other and its future operations.

The day has been designed to bring staff together and provide an opportunity for them to examine, discuss, problem solve and consolidate on a number of areas that are impacting on their work, communication, performance, service development and ultimately service delivery. Discussions, practical examples and group work exercises will be used throughout the day to further enhance and develop communication and team building skills.

OBJECTIVES FOR THE TEAM:

  • To examine and discuss the team’s vision, aims and objectives, roles, responsibilities and goals
  • To examine and discuss how the team functions, communicates, operates and relationships within the team
  • To examine and discuss individual and team skills, strengths and development areas
  • To examine and discuss dynamics within the team which causes it to function well or badly
  • To examine the expectations that the team members have of each other and of management and vice versa; in order to understand and clarify roles, responsibilities and professional boundaries as well as to establish appropriate ways of working and communicating together
  • To identify, examine and discuss the skills that are needed individually and collectively to make the team effective and efficient as well as to maintain consistency in Care practice
  • To examine the ways in which the team communicates, the impact and effect that communication has upon the team and most importantly how communication in all areas can be improved
  • To examine and discuss changes that are/will be affecting the team and examine strategies for working through these changes and identify new priorities as well as challenges

The essence of a Team Away Day is to see what stops the team getting where it wants to be and looking at both the ‘what’ and ‘how’ the team can do and doing something about it!! The central message of the Day is ‘Making a Difference’ and ‘Finding Solutions’. The team should therefore, work only on issues which are within the power of the team to affect. Issues which are beyond the control of the team should be noted and allocated to the most appropriate person(s) in the team to pursue. Remember, the day should be about the realisation of what can be done!!!
