WRITING SKILLS FOR CARE STAFF

AIMS:

The ability to communicate effectively is an important business and personal skill. Communication will only be as successful as the people who are communicating. Staff are expected to communicate effectively with a whole range of people and to record what they do. Writing is an essential skill in the work place today. It is an important written communication skill and not necessarily one that comes naturally.

The course provides an ideal opportunity and acts as a “starter” for participants who want to improve their writing skills and re-assess their current abilities and develop new skills. The course aims to provide a practical guide to participants on the essential skills that are needed to write effectively. The session should be utilised as a time for the personal development of their written communication skills.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Identified and discussed the forms of written communication in the workplace
  • Discussed the importance of written communication to the individual, team and the organisation
  • Identified and discussed the main features of written communication
  • Identified and discussed the key skills necessary for written communication to be effective
  • Discussed the importance of grammar, punctuation and spelling in written communication
  • Identified and discussed issues concerning the use of words, language, style and tone in writing
  • Considered how people represent themselves in their language and learn how to detect this
  • Examined and discussed recording systems within the workplace
  • Undertaken various analyses of their writing skills and identified key areas for their personal development
  • Practice techniques in a variety of exercises and give and receive feedback from others
